What a Live Concert for Her Majesty Betty_Diamond Jubilee Madness!

The street sign that I met on my way home say it all: 3 to 5 June, Diamond Jubilee, avoid central London. Yes, it is a good prompt. Especially when seven out of twelve public bridges were closed for the royal parade on the river Thames (this happened, no jokes, Sunday the third). Still, I don't know what magic spell the city centre has on me, I always found myself unable to stay out of it. Anyway, in this case, I bet that you wouldn't follow the advice either. Not just for pure spirit of contradiction, but simply because who doesn't want to be where the action is?

So, while the heavy rain almost ruined Sunday's celebrations, the big concert organized by the BBC and Gary Barlow (former singer of Take That) and set at Buckingham Palace, was a huge success. The Union Jack-ed crowd cheered tirelessly. They wore wigs, crowns and feather boas, waved flags, sang along with no shame at all.

Specialmente quando sette su dodici ponti sono stati chiusi in vista della parata reale che attraversa il Tamigi (è successo veramente, non scherzo, tutto bloccato domenica 3 giugno). Eppure, chissà per quale misteriosa ragione, mi è impossibile tenermi alla larga dalla zona centrale. Ad ogni modo, in questa particolare situazione, posso scommettere che chiunque avrebbe ignorato il consiglio. E non per semplice spirito di contraddizione, ma piuttosto perché chi non vorrebbe trovarsi nel centro dell'azione in un momento simile?

Quindi, mentre la pioggia scrosciante ha quasi totalmente rovinato i festeggiamenti domenicali, il grande concerto organizzato dalla BBC e da Gary Barlow (si, l'ex cantante dei Take That) presso Buckingham Palace è stato un enorme successo. La folla, letteralmente ricoperta dall'iconica Union Jack, ha acclamato incessantemente. Quasi tutti indossavano parrucche, corone o boa di piume dipinti di rosso bianco e blu, e cantavano con i loro idoli senza accenno di vergogna.

Not only the very patriotic English ones were involved in this event, people from all around the world was delighted by a spectacular line-up: to start the show Robbie Williams, wearing a military jacket, sang Let Me Entertain You, followed by Will.i.am an Jessie J duet. In that precise moment I was walking my way through the main stage. An English boy band, JLS, performed She Makes Me Wanna Oh Oh Oh (I don't have a clue of who the hell are they), is that dedicated to her majesty? Weird though! Then Gary Barlow shared the stage with the beautiful Cheryl Cole. 

Questo evento non ha coinvolto solo gli irriducibilmente patriottici inglesi, centinaia di persone provenienti da ogni parte del mondo hanno goduto dello spettacolo offerto loro da cantanti d'eccezione: ad aprire le danze Robbie Williams, che con addosso una stretta giacca militare ha cantato Let me entertain you, seguito poi dal duetto di Will.i.am e Jessie J. 
In quel preciso momento mi stavo facendo strada attraverso la folla nel disperato tentativo di raggiungere il palco principale. Intanto una boy band inglese, i JLS, si esibiva in She makes me wanna oh oh oh (non ho la minima idea di chi siano questi ragazzetti), dedicata a sua maestà? Abbastanza bizzarra come scelta! 
Subito dopo Gary Barlow ha diviso il palco con la bellissima Cheryl Cole.

I decided that was impossible to get closer, so The Mall with the big screens became my final location.

Because I do!), so to balance the brassy pop beginnig we need some classical music. What about a solo at piano of Aud Lang Syne and why not, Opera? The English tenor Alfie Boe gave us his own version of O Sole Mio.

La regina Elisabetta seconda sembra essere una donna eclettica in quanto a gusti musicali (in questo momento ve la state immaginando che ascolta Kanye West con il suo Ipod di platino?Io si!), quindi per bilanciare il vistoso inizio pop c'è stato bisogno di un tocco di musica classica. Un assolo al pianoforte di Aud Lang Syne e, perchè no, dell'Opera. Il tenore inglese Alfie Boe ha eseguito la sua versione di O sole mio.

The ginger head Ed Sheeran sang a bitter-sweet ballad, Little Lady, melting the crowd with the notes of his acustic guitar.

The moment that all the ladies were waiting for, the man, the voice, the myth: Tom Jones. He never aged, how can he still have this incredible deep blues voice? Even if we all wish he was doing Sex Bomb, he performed a more convntional Delilah, just right after Mama Told Me.

A Food Feast Under London Bridge_The Borough Market

Thursday 11:30 AM. My morning starts with a cheesy and a bit spicy bretzel at London Bridge Station. I am starving and, unaware of the exquisite delicatessen I'll be surrounded all day long, I give in to temptation and grab the semi-fresh salty German snack. I am just getting ready for the main course. 

Giovedì, undici e trenta del mattino. La mia giornata comincia con un pretzel al formaggio un po' speziato dentro la stazione di London Bridge. Sto morendo di fame e, ignara delle squisite delizie gastronomiche che mi attendono, cedo alla tentazione della famosa ciambellina salata tedesca. Mi sto solo preparando al piatto principale.

Who Wants to Marry an Hipster?The Brick Lane Sensation

I know I wrote before about Shoreditch as a venue for emerging international music talents, but I feel this urge to come back there and explore the Hipster subculture. During a gloomy weekend I plunged in the deepest ocean of this alternative lifestyle, willing to be torn away from my bad mood by an handsome Brick Lane-goer.

Yes, I have to confess, as an admirer of good movies, indie music, and art in general, hipsters are more likely to become my soulmates than all rest of the English guys. Why? Because according to my sources (which I do not unveiled) and my personal experience, they live, eat and breath for everything that is far from the mainstream. Plus that phoney effortless with a whiff of retrò look arouses me so much.

Therefore, despite the rain, wrapped in my oh-so-fake-Burberry trench, with my black beanie and scarf, I capitalised on flyering for the British Student Film Festival and got engaged in weird conversations with these daring V-neck lovers. Then I lost myself in contemplation inside the legendary vinyl store Rough Trade East slightly after the Record Store Day, had a pint at Big Chill Bar and walked throught the land of the "Shoreditch twats".

Lo so vi ho già parlato di Shoreditch come luogo dove trovare nuovi talenti musicali emergenti, ma sento il dovere di tornare in argomento per affrontare il fenomeno Hipster. Durante un particolarmente grigio weekend mi sono immersa nel profondo oceano di questa cultura alternativa, cercando di migliorare il mio pessimo umore grazie a un piacente e assiduo frequentatore di Brick Lane. Ebbene si, devo confessarlo, come appassionata di bei film, musica indipendente e arte in generale, gli hipster hanno su di me un ascendente maggiore rispetto agli altri ragazzi inglesi. Perchè?   Semplicemente visto che secondo le mie fonti (che non vi rivelerò) e la mia esperienza personale i tipici hipster vivono di tutto ciò che c'è di più lontano dal mainstream. E poi vogliamo mettere il fascino del finto stile "mi sono messo la prima cosa che mi capita", con quel tocco di vintage che non guasta?

Così, nonostante la pioggia, avvolta nel mio trench, con il mio cappellino anti capello increspato e la sciarpa nera, ho sfruttato il volantinaggio per il British Student Film Festival a mio favore e ho attaccato bottone con questi coraggiosi amanti delle magliette con profondo scollo a V. Poi mi sono persa in contemplazione nel leggendario negozio di vinili Rough Trade East, poco dopo il Record Store Day, ho consumato la mia pinta da Big Chill Bar e camminato attraverso l'universo degli "Shoreditch twats" (è un termine dispregiativo sappiatelo!).

Mentre leggete qui come diventare un vero e proprio Hipster, guardate in cosa mi sono imbattuta durante la mia due giorni a Brick Lane.

Brick Lane is also full of ethnic restaurants, if you want to taste something different. Funny story the rivalry between two bagel's shops: one next to the other, they fight for your attention with these signs.

Se volete assaggiare qualcosa di diverso, Brick Lane offre anche un'ampia scelta di ristoranti etnici. Divertente la lotta tra due venditori di bagel (le famose ciambelle salate), a pochi passi uno dall'altro si contendono l'attenzione dei passanti con queste insegne.

Which one do you pick? The one with an "historical background" (is the first always the best?), or the one twentyforseven (no matter what, it is there for you!). Carefully, this is a choice with profound meanings behind!

Quale scegliete? Quello con un contesto storico (il primo è sempre il migliore?), o quello aperto 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7 (non importa cosa succeda, è sempre lì per voi!). Attenti, è una decisione che nasconde profonde implicazioni!


On Sundays Shoreditch is a nice place to have the typical roast, and that's exactly what I did. At Old Spitalfields Market you have plenty of things to see. Check the schedule online because between this Victorian market halls there are displays of jewllery, affortable vintage clothes and even Indipendent Record Labels!

Durante le domeniche Shoreditch è il posto ideale per gustare il tipico Sunday Roast, ed è esattamente ciò che ho fatto io. Old Spitalfields Market, poi, è un posto ricco di oggetti interessanti. Controllate il programma online, tra i banchi di questo mercato vittoriano potrete trovare gioielleria, abiti vintage e persino Etichette Indipendenti!

Happy Easter in SouthBank

It's Easter time! Marvellous spring weather, couples at parks, events all over the city. But there is more out there in the sun. This year London is in for a world record: did you hear about the Big Egg Hunt? If you were wandering around the centre, during these past two months, surely you'd seen a certain number of decorated Easter eggs. The quick explanation for this uncommon display is that over 200 giant Fabergé eggs, created by famous names such as Mulberry, Ridley Scott, Zandra Rhodes, Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Quinn, Bruce Oldfield and the Chapman brothers, are part of a record-breaking egg hunt across Central London to raise money for two charity organisations (Elephant Family and Action for Children).

Everyone is envited to join this huge hunt across the capital, and try to win the Fabergé Diamond Jubilee Egg, but hurry up because this is the last week! Take a look at the Zone maps, if that's not enough I give you some hints with the pictures I took in Southbank less than a week ago.

E' arrivata Pasqua! Portando con se un meraviglioso tempo primaverile, le coppiette nei parchi, ed eventi sparsi per tutta la città. Ma c'è molto di più là fuori sotto il sole. Quest'anno Londra cerca di battere un record: avete sentito parlare della  Big Egg Hunt? Se durante gli scorsi due mesi avete passeggiato in centro, sicuramente avrete notato un certo numero di uova pasquali decorate. La spiegazione veloce di questa insolita esposizione è che le oltre 200 uova Fabergé giganti, create da personaggi famosi come Mulberry, Ridley Scott, Zandra Rhodes, Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Quinn, Bruce Oldfield e i fratelli Chapman, sono parte della caccia all'uovo da record allestita per tutta Londra al fine di raccogliere fondi per le associazioni benefiche Elephant Family e Action for Children.

Tutti sono invitati a partecipare per vincere il Fabergé Diamond Jubilee Egg, ma fate in fretta questa è l'ultima settimana di gioco! Date uno sguardo alle zone dove rintracciare le uova e se non vi basta ecco dei piccoli indizi sotto forma di foto che ho scattato qualche settimana fa a Southbank.
